Voted New Zealand’s best beach, ‘the Mount's Main Beach’ is the ultimate spot to swim, surf and sunbathe. With perfect white sand, thundering waves surfers and boogie boarders ride waves of all sizes here. There is often a good left-hand break off the northern end of the beach, and a right-hand break off the southern end. Sign up for a surf lesson and hire a board on the sand dunes beside the beach or take to the rocks surrounding Moturiki Island to fish for snapper, kahawai and gurnard.
It is the perfect place to people watch and to bring the family for an impromptu game of football or cricket. In the summer often both beach volleyball competitions, national and regional surf lifesaving competitions are held on this beach in summer, drawing large crowds and lots of other entertainment.
Facing the Mount’s Main Beach is a cluster of cafes and restaurants where you can grab an espresso coffee, treat yourself to an ice-cream or plenty of other delicious food options. If you don't like sand between your toes, then stick to the popular boardwalk runs the full length of Main Beach up behind the sand dunes.
